Subject: SM NAMES NEW ASM FOR SW OHIO

DAYTON AREA HAM IS NAMED SOUTHWEST OHIO ASSISTANT SECTION MANAGER

          
Dave Coons, WT8W, of New Carlisle (near Dayton) is a CW specialist (25
WPM), held  many Dayton ARA offices including president and for several
summers has been an instructor at Handi-Hams camps. He also once served
the ARRL as Great Lakes Division Director.
          
Now Dave will continue his service to the ARRL as the new Assistant
Section Manager for Southwest Ohio. He was appointed Thursday by
Section Manager Joe Phillips, K8QOE. Dave replaces the late John
Haungs, W8STX (SK) who died May 10th. SM Phillips said Dave was one of
nine SW Ohio candidates for the position.
          
As ASM, Dave will represent the Section Manager through out a 16 county
area and write an SW Ohio Happenings column in the Ohio Section
Journal.
          
Beside his CW credits and DARA offices Dave has worked on several
Dayton Hamvention committees and is a former member of Air Force MARS.
          
It was 1996 when Dave was appointed Great Lakes Division Vice-Director
replacing George Race, WB8BGY, who had just become Division Director.
In 1997, Dave was elected Vice Director for a full term. Three months
after that term began, the elected Director resigned and Dave served
almost the entire two year term as Division Director.
          
He was first licensed as a novice in 1963, a year later upgraded to
General class, Advanced and Extra in the 80s. His original call was
WA8IGD.  He and his wife, Rita, have been married 56 years and have
three children. Two boys are both hams - David Michael Coons is KB8EKD
and Christopher Allen Coons, who holds his dad's original call,
WA8IGD.
          
Dave is a member of Huber Heights ARC and the Clark County ARC. He
continues to be active in CW, through the ARRL bulletins, and PSK
modes.
          
The following counties are in the Southwest Ohio area - Adams, Brown,
Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clinton, Clermont, Darke, Fayette, Greene,
Hamilton, Highland, Miami. Montgomery, Preble, and Warren. Major cities
in this geographical area are; Cincinnati, Dayton, Springfield,
Hamilton, Fairfield, Middletown, Sidney and Hillsboro.
