Thanks for the info Ernie.  I'll have to start paying attention to the
beacons, as I have never listened for them.  Excellent idea.

I copied 24 beacon stations (from 16 states) between 28.2 and 28.3 MHz 
yesterday just before noon. They were spread out from California, to 
Maine to Texas and South Carolina. If you can hear the low power beacons 
(usually less than 10 watts), you should be able to work someone on 
voice with about a 100 watt transmitter.
